The Creation Story
When I started getting a bit more serious about my running back in 2012, for some reason I decided I was going to start a blog to share my experiences with the world.
Turns out, people didn’t care that much about reading my split times from my track workouts…
Honestly, I can’t say I blame them.
Once I got bored with writing about my workouts, which only took a couple of weeks at most, I shifted gears.
The next plan was pretty straight-forward: create one of the best running blogs in the world…
Yeah, that didn’t exactly go to plan either.
Around this time I discovered podcasts, launched the Better Health 101 Podcast, and started to think about adding a running podcast to my fledgling running website.
And that is how Diz Runs Radio was born!
Diz Runs Radio
1 July 2014 may not be the day that will live in infamy forever, but that was the day that Diz Runs Radio was born.
And here we are, still going strong.
Over the years, there have been some minor tweaks/adjustments that have been made along the way. But for the most part, the idea of the show remains the same: talk to fellow runners about running, life, and everything in between.
In addition to the interviews, I also do a weekly episode where I offer some type of tip/coaching point that I call Quick Tip episodes.
In the early days of the QTs, I did a pretty good job of keeping things in the 10-15 minute range. These days, it seems like the average duration of a QT episode is well over 20 minutes, so perhaps I should start calling these Quick-ish Tips, eh?
But I digress…
The podcast is a lot of work, but it is also a lot of fun! I’ve been able to have conversations with so many awesome runners, and many guests have legitimately become good friends since our first chat.
If you haven’t checked out the show yet, you can find it on pretty much any/every major podcast directory and/or podcatcher out there.
If you just type Diz Runs into the search on your app of choice, it should pop right up.
Too lazy to open an app and actually find the show? Let me help you out.
Who is Diz?
One of the most common questions I get has to do with my name/nickname.
Allow me to clear that up right off the bat.
My name is Denny, well Dennis if we are being official, and Diz is my college nickname.
So where did Diz come from?
Perhaps you’re familiar with Snoop Doggy Dogg?
Well, when I was in college I could speak -izzle with the best of the best.
It wasn’t long before my nickname was Dizzle Krizzle, and that was eventually shortened to Diz.
And like any good nickname, it stuck fit like a glove and stuck like glue.
For the record, I wouldn’t be shocked if there were more than a few guys that I went to college with that either think that Diz is my given name or have no idea what my actual name is.
Now that we’ve cleared up my name/nickname confusion, let’s dive a little deeper.
My most important titles are husband and dad.
For the record, Beks is the cute one and Adi is our daughter.
And also for the record, all three of us have a fondness for Disney World.
Being locals, though don’t forget that I’m a Michigander and not a native Floridian, we tend to make regular trips to the House of Mouse for fun and shenanigans whenever we can sneak up there for the morning.
Other than that, I’m pretty much a fan of all things sport.
My favorites are hockey and futbol, though I’ll pretty much watch any athletic competition that is being televised.
Speaking of television, you can’t go wrong with an episode of Seinfeld.
While I am admittedly late to the party, Parks and Rec may be the best new TV show of the past 15 years.
And not for nothing, Ron Swanson is my spirit animal.
Beyond the Podcast
What started out as a small little blog that nobody read gradually grew into a small little podcast that very few people listened to.
But that podcast has grown.
Now we have an empire on our hands!
Ok, so maybe an empire is a bit of an over-exaggeration.
But we are a bit more than just a little podcast at this point.
The Diz Runs “Empire” now includes:
And this just the tip of the ice burg.
I have no shortage of plans and ideas to continue growing the empire. At this point, it simply comes down to being patient, working on one project at a time, and continuing to worry about the next step in the process.
Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither has my empire been.
But make no mistake, the Diz Runs Empire will be a thing.
