April Woo Continues to Push Herself as a Runner While Balancing Kids, Work, and Life!

On today’s episode of the show, I’m chatting with April Woo for a few easy miles.

To say that April is busy would be an incredible understatment: this mom of 4 finds time for her own training, in addition to working, coaching youth sports, and a whole host of other obligations of daily life.

Not a Life Long Distance Runner

April wasn’t much of a runner when whe was younger.

She was an athlete and played whatever sport was in season, and she’d occasionally run with her mom, but she wasn’t a runner until after her kids were born.

About 8 years ago, April got hooked up with some other ladies that got together to run at 5 am most mornings.

While the other ladies were running 7-8 minute miles, April was struggling to maintain a 10 minute pace for those morning runs.

Over the years, April has continued to get faster and is now up there leading the pack at those same 5 am runs!

Scary Lesson Learned

April’s second marathon was a rough experience to say the least.

April passed out at Mile 22, and doesn’t remember anything after Mile 20.

That race was a hot one, and April hadn’t figured out what she needed to do for fueling before a marathon at that point.

Looking back on the situation, she was dehydrated but she also just didn’t have any fuel in her system.

And since then, April has definitely figured out what she needs to do before a race.

The moral of the story is that we each need to figure out what we need to do for fueling before a race, and for some that definitely meand eating some real food before a hard run or race.

Finding the Time

April is busy.

Her “secret” for getting her training miles in while balancing all of the other aspects of life is a simple one: get up early.

Not everyone is a morning person, but getting up early helps ensure that your runs will happen.

Waiting to run later in the day allows life to get in the way.

So running early allows April to make it happen, and that works for me as well!
