I didn’t know much about Ben Wacther before our chat other than the fact that he was a runner.
After talking to him, I’ve reaffirmed that every runner has a story to tell.
Being a Pacer
One of the things that I didn’t know about Ben before our chat is that he’s been a marathon pacer in the past.
I’ve thought of pacing for races in the past, so I had lots of questions for Ben about his experience as a pacer.
My biggest hesitancy to serve as a pacer has always been that I’d have a terrible race and not be able to hit the time goal, which would cause others to miss their time goals as well.
Ben said that pacing can be a bit stressful, but it’s also a lot of fun and very rewarding when you’re helping someone finish their first marathon or set a new PR.
As difficult as it is, Ben loves it and has no plans to stop pacing anytime soon.
Future Running Plans
Beyond continuing to pace races, Ben has a couple of other running goals that he is continuing to work towards.
One is in the 5k, where he really wants to break the 20 min mark at some point.
He’s also thinking about actually racing a marathon (to date, all of the marathons he has run have been as a pacer) to see what he can do if he really tries to open it up and give it hell on his own.
Ben has also started a couple of ultras (50k) but has yet to finish one.
At some point he is definitely planning to tame that beast.
