Novelist Brian Burk is Tackling Every Race On His Horizon

Today I’m running with someone that I have been looking to bring onto the show for a while now.

Brian Burk Running

Brian Burk

Brian Burk is a runner with an impressive running resume of over 100 races, including 16 marathons andultra-lengthength races.
In 2016, he published his first novel centered around one of the most iconic 100 milers in the country, the Leadville 100!

 An Unlikely Beginning

While serving in the armed forces and stationed in Greenland, Brian was looking for a way to lose some weight.
He began running on the treadmill, and before he knew it he was hooked on the sport.
It wasn’t long before Brian started running race after race.
Over time, marathons turned into 50 milers. And it wasn’t long before he added 100 milers to the mix as well.

Between The Pages

Brian’s book, Running to Leadville, is a fictional story.
Brian has yet to run Leadville, but he did his research and nailed most of the details of the race.
Brian definitely poured a lot of himself into the novel, so much so that the main character’s name is also Brian.

Preparing to Suffer

Before every race, Brian takes a specific approach that attributes to his success.
Dont feed the trolls.
Brian believes that blocking out all negative self-talk is crucial to his success in any race.
He doesn’t listen to the voices in his head telling that he can’t do it.
That said, Brian also understands the difficulty of running and racing. He is always “prepared to suffer” throughout any race that he enters.

And when he is suffering in a race, Brian focuses on the next step rather than the finish line and convinces himself that in a few short moments the suffering will all be over.
