Cory Reese DNFd His First Few Marathons, Now 26.2 is Just a Warm Up
On today’s episode of the show, I’m going a few miles with fellow Altra Ambassador Cory Reese.
I first “met” Cory in the Altra Ambassador FB group page, and the first thing that “jumped” out at me was his epic running selfies.

A Bumpy Start to Distance Running
Cory had been itching to try distance running, “only” a marathon, but finishing his first marathon was a bit of a process.
He had signed up for a local marathon (St. George) a couple of times, started, and dropped before he finally made it to the finish line for the first time.
While he enjoyed road racing, once he discovered trail running he was officially hooked.
Running Ultras

Cory Reese Jumping, Again
These days, Cory’s bread and butter distances are ultra marathons.
As you might expect, I had to ask Cory for some advice for those of us (and yes, I’m included in this group) that are planning to run their first ultra in the not too distant future.
A few tips Cory gave include:
- SLOW Down!
- Embrace the pain, especially for the longer ultras
- You will get to the finish, no matter how far the finish is

The Solo 100 Miler
In 2014, Cory set a goal to run 12 100 milers, on per month, for the year.
In that year, he ran several organized races but he also ran a few solo 100 milers.
Let that sink in for a minute.
Solo. 100 miles.
While I can’t even begin to wrap my head around running 100 miles solo, let alone running 400 laps on the local high school track which he did once, Cory actually enjoys the solo endeavors.
The dude is crazy.
Nowhere Near First
Earlier this fall, Cory’s first book was released.
Nowhere Near First is a collection of stories from Cory’s experience as a back of the pack ultra marathoner.
And whether you’re an ultra runner or not, it’s a great book that I can’t recommend it enough.

Nowhere Near First by Cory Reese
And while this is Cory’s first book, there’s a very good chance it won’t be his last.
Stay tuned!
