Jonathan Beverly

As a former Editor at Running Times, a high school cross country coach, and lifelong runner Jonathan has learned a thing or two about running.

Aging is Inevitable and Should be Embraced

No runner is immune to the effects of aging, therefore adapting is a necessity.

  • Implement new routines to improve mobility, strength, and stride.
  • Mental adaptation is as important as the physical.
  • Strong emotional attachments are made to paces/times and can interfere with the goal of longevity in running.
  • “What is the best I can do today? What is a good result for me?” These will constantly be changing.

As a runner in his 50’s, Jonathan is learning to compete with his aging body.

Training along with goals should constantly evolve.

Mind-Games

Allowing ego to get in the way is the biggest mistake a runner can make.

Jonathan has concluded that people that run forever have 2 things in common:

  • Humility
  • Hunger

The dangers of success are that one gets attached to success.

If winning is the only goal then running just becomes the means to an end.

We Have a Will- Use it

People are wired for struggle and have slowly evolved into sedentary lifestyles.

Running is one of the few places people to can choose to put themselves into a struggle.

The body may say no, but the mind says yes.

One can either see the world through a fixed mindset or a growth mindset.

A growth mindset is optimal for runners that want to continue running long-term.
