Kate White Is Going The Distance To Help Inspire Change

Kate White, one of my Team in Training teammates will be joining me on the show today.

In January, we will be going 13.1 miles at the Walt Disney World marathon weekend.

I am looking forward to going a few easy miles with Kate White today and getting to know my teammate better.

From A 5k To A Marathon

Growing up Kate mostly did soccer, but gave up all sports once she was in college.

Post-college Kate knew she wanted to get back into sports again, but was unsure of where to start.

A flier for a Team in Training Disney race was hanging up in her office.

Kate was more than a little intrigued and immediately contacted the organization.

The longest race she had run prior to this was a 5k.

Over the course of a few months, Kate went from 5k training to marathon training.

Giving Up Running- Temporarily

Kate’s first full for Team in Training was over 10 years ago.

Since that time she has run one other marathon, a few half marathons, and vowed to hang up her running shoes for good.

Her first marathon was Disney and it was a great experience full of energy and support.

Her second marathon was a much smaller race that left her running solo for the majority of the miles.

Pregnancy and various health issues prevented her from running consistently over the years.

Kate was convinced at one point that she would never run again.

That all changed 4 years ago when she was able to slowly get back to the sport she once loved.

As a single mom training consistently is much harder than the actual day of the race.

Creating Change

The original decision to join Team in Training was not a deeply personal one.

That all changed a few years ago when she found out that her best friend’s daughter was diagnosed with leukemia.

Her friend’s daughter was only two and a half years old at the time.

Kate wanted to use her running to make a difference.

Kate and 3 others formed a team and raised over $8,000 as a part of their fundraising for a half marathon.

The little girl that Kate runs for recently finished her treatment over the summer.

This upcoming Team in Training race will be Kate’s first time fundraising solo.

Just Ask

The prospect of raising a significant amount of money for a charity can be scary and intimidating.

Kate has learned over the years that most companies are very generous and all it takes is asking.

Various charities exist and the most important part is choosing one that is personal to you.

Kate works in an office setting and has a letter posted to her door explaining what she is doing and why.

This simple act has garnered numerous donations and support.

A spaghetti dinner with raffles can be another easy way to raise funds for a charity.

Team in Training is another resource that members can look to when trying to raise money.

The website offers ideas and suggestions on how to reach your goal.
