Listener Q&A: January 2023
Seems like just a month ago, it was last year…
New year, the dad joke game is still strong!
Also still going strong in 2023? The monthly Q&A episode of the podcast!
You Ask, I Answer!
In case you’re new to these parts, here’s what’s going on.
At the end of every month, I do an episode dedicated to you and your questions.
Want to get a question answered in a future Q&A episode? Come join our FB group, watch for the post asking for Qs, and put your query in the comments.
Basically, whatever you ask I try to answer!
Sometimes, the answers aren’t worth a whole lot. But every once in a while I like to think (or at least hope!) that I hit the nail on the head!
When it comes to free advice, there are no guarantees that you won’t get any more than what you paid for it.
That said, I promise to do my best!
And if nothing else, there are usually at least a few decent memes/GIFs to make it worth your while.
Let’s get into this month’s questions, shall we?
This Month’s Questions
I seem to be really good at running a few tenths longer than 13.1 on race day. Is this normal?
What does it mean if every race some different part of your body is really hurting?
How do you get to sleep the night before a big race?
What’s better during training: body weight, resistance bands, or weight?
How strict are you if your HR starts ticking up a bit on a hill?
Is sacrificing heart rate on a hill mental training or physical?
If you could be a guest on any other podcast, which would you choose?
How many pairs of shoes do you think you’ll go through running the year?
How often do you change your base mileage when you’re not training for a marathon but trying to stay in 13.1 shape?
How can an experienced runner benefit from having a coach?
Any marathons you’d recommend for a fellow 50 Stater?
I really enjoyed Pocatello, ID.
Running with the Bears (CA) was a race I’d absolutely run again, though it’s changed a bit since I ran it.
Blue Ridge (VA), for sure.
Honestly, I could find reasons to revisit every race I’ve done so far.
But that won’t get me to 50, so…
How do you listen to podcasts/audiobooks while running?
How do you keep a positive mindset following a goal race?
Would you count an ultra for one of your 50 State marathons?
How many marathons have you run?
What do you think of Kipchoge’s chances to win Boston this year?
Any good ways to prepare for a race at altitude while living at sea level?
How does “run easy” help if your body won’t change without pushing it?
What is the benefit of strength training, especially for folks in their 50s (and older)?
How do you see the Lions season in retrospect?
How cheap is too cheap for running shoes for you?
Have you ever run the Gate River Run in Jax?
What runners do you follow/care about, since you don’t care about the elites?
Any real advantages of strides over surges? Or vise versa?
Have you visited a local running store yet?
Has the running laundry situation changed post-more?
How long does one wait to refuel post-race?
In run fueling: what’s your recommendation?
What is your go-to ice cream flavor?
Two races, a month a part. One 26.2, one 13.1. Does it matter which order you run them, if neither are really goal races?
Have you noticed that runners have a harder time bouncing back as they age?
And that’s that…
