QT: Look Back on Your Past Before Moving Forward to the Future
When I was younger, my favorite thing about the end of the year was the annual “best videos of the year” countdowns on MTV and VH1.
Judging by the lack of music videos shown on either channel these days, I’d say it’s safe to assume they don’t look back at the year’s best videos anymore, eh?
As the new year approaches, I’m legitimately excited for what is in store.
I have big plans (and goals) for my running, for my business, and (most importantly) for my family.
I’m guessing that you probably have some goals in mind for the new year as well, yes?
Take a Look Back Before Looking Forward
You can’t change the past, obviously. Before you dive headfirst into your goals for 2018, I’d like to encourage you to press pause on looking forward and take a little bit of time to reflect back on the year that is rapidly winding down.
But before you dive headfirst into your goals for 2018, I’d like to encourage you to press pause on looking forward and take a little bit of time to look back on the year that is rapidly winding down.
Think about your wins. Your losses. Your lessons learned. The progress that you’ve made.
That’s a fair question.
Why waste your time looking back when you could be planning for your future?
The answer is really quite simple: we can learn a lot about what probably lies in store by looking into our past.

There are Always Lessons to be Learned
How was your 2017?
Hopefully, you knocked it out of the park this year.
New PRs. A year of good health and steady progress. Some shiny bling. Lots of good memories.
If that is the case, wouldn’t you like to have a similar year in 2018?
And if your 2017 was a rough year, I bet you’d rather avoid a repeat next year eh?
No matter how things went for you this year, there are plenty of things that you can take away from this year to help improve next year.
All you have to do is take the time to actually look back and analyze what went right and/or wrong, then use that information to help you be successful in 2018.
Just. Fricking. Do It.
It’s honestly not that complicated. It just takes a little bit of time/effort.
If you have some sort of running journal, get it out and look through the past 12 months (or more!).
What worked? What didn’t?
After reminding yourself of some of the nitty gritty from this year, head out the door for an easy few miles.
Leave the headphones at home for this one.
Instead of listening to some music or my sultry voice in your ear buds, use this run to process your notes/reflections on the past year and start formulating the plan for 2018 based on the things you learned about yourself in 2017.
It really does work.
As long as you actually do it, of course…
