Maggie Guterl is Searching for Her Limits Off the Beaten Path

Today I’m catching up with elite ultra runner Maggie Guterl, a previous guest on the show.

Maggie Guterl at Western States
?: Paul Nelson

Since last talking in 2015 she has run Western States and has earned multiple podium finishes in various races. Challenges are nothing new to Maggie and she shares her race plans for 2018 and beyond.

No Challenge Too Big

If running 100-mile races weren’t challenging enough, Maggie is looking to raise the bar.

Possibilities for 2018 include multi-day treks, 200-mile races, 24-hour team USA qualifier, Hardrock 100, and none other than the Barkley Marathons.

These races all have unique challenges that make them enticing. Barkley’s draw is that no woman has ever finished and Maggie hopes to change that.

Not Immune to Rough Patches

Running has its share of rough patches even for the most talented athletes, Maggie included. The unpredictability of life during 2017 had a profound effect on her training and racing.

She logged her two slowest 100-mile races this past year at Western States and Run Rabbit Run. The end result of these races was not all bad and she learned some lessons along the way.

?: Dave Wiskowski

Admittedly she struggles with moderation and is learning to balance work, life, and running. Her Western States and Run Rabbit Run were the culmination of two years of continuous training with no breaks.

Longevity on the running scene is the ultimate goal for Maggie. In order to accomplish that she incorporates running breaks into her schedule and listens to her body.
