Today I welcome back my first ever guest on the show Mark Remy.
While the name may not sound familiar at first, there is a good chance that you have read something he has written.
He is the creator and man behind the Dumb Runner Training Journal.
In addition, he has written 4 other books, was editor-at-large for Runner’s World magazine, and is now a guest contributor.
From Small Town to Big Dreams
Growing up Mark was a cyclist from a small town in Ohio.
He published books on running and yet didn’t get his start as a runner.
For over a decade he unknowingly laid a great foundation for this new to him sport.
He gradually realized that his talents were more in line with running rather than cycling.
Many years later he re-visited his hometown as an adult and a runner. His article “Did Running Save My Life?” was featured in Runner’s World.

“Rules” for Running
According to Mark the most important rule is there are no rules.
Mark dislikes the “S” word…Should. Don’t overcomplicate running.
Some of his guidelines for new runners are:
- Just go.
- Be patient.
- Pay attention- to your body and surroundings. Just take it all in.
Against the Grain
The majority of running articles are dry and prescriptive.
Mark is not like most. The basis of Dumb Runner is mostly satirical with some broad guidelines sprinkled in.
The Dumb Runner Manifesto:
- Running should be simple. Period.
- There is beauty in every run, if you take the time to look. Music, too, if you listen for it.
- Laughter is good. So is pie. More of both please.

Join The Tribe!
There’s always room for more members of the tribe! Both the Facebook group and the email group provide opportunities that can’t be found anywhere else. The Facebook group is still small, but it is a great way to connect with fellow runners and foster community amongst like-minded individuals. The email group is THE way to stay up to date about future guests on the show, as well as getting some other freebies and offers that aren’t available to anyone else. If you’ve got questions about either/both, just let me know!
