Marty Hofmann is Killing Complacency in Himself and Others
My guest today is the host of the Kill Complacency podcast which is focused on living an intentional and disciplined life and the freedom that comes with that.
As someone who hated running a few years ago, he followed his advice and has now completed races of all distances including ultras.
I am looking forward to going a few easy miles with Marty Hofmann today!
A True Novice
Marty Hofmann was never a runner growing up and he always hated running.
His brothers were more athletic, so Marty turned to them when he decided to try the sport.
Marty suggested doing a half marathon, but his brother convinced him to jump straight to the marathon.
He and his brothers signed up for the Phoenix Rock n Roll Marathon.
Looking back, Marty realizes how little he truly knew about the sport.
There was a huge learning curve during his training.
He learned much about what not to do in training and racing, but he was hooked nonetheless.
Run Happy
Over the years Marty has adopted the philosophy run happy.
Thus far, he has completed 5 to 6 marathons and 1 ultra marathon.
Marty has begun to enjoy the training process as much or more than the race itself.
Currently, he is training for a 100k ultra which will be his longest distance to date.
He has gotten somewhat bored with the marathon distance and wants a greater challenge.
Marty has a goal of finishing the race in 12 hours or less.
He wants to lean into the hard and find his limit.
His Why
Marty has a lot of reasons for continuing to run and set goals.
First and foremost, he wants to be in good physical shape for his grandchildren.
Marty has 6 kids and there are times he questions how much time he commits to training.
His solution is to get all of his training done early in the day.
Marty aims to be present and intentional with his family while also balancing training.
His 100k race is in November and he is focused on increasing mileage while staying healthy.
Kill Complacency Podcast
Marty first began his Podcast, Kill Complacency 6 months ago.
His goal in starting the venture was to help others lean into the hard, just as he learned.
Doing hard things builds success, but it also requires taking intentional steps.
The first step is to think about your future self and what that will look like.
Anyone can design their future by setting goals and then taking steps.
According to Marty, a routine can be good as long as it takes you to where you want to be.
The compound effect is critical to finding success.
Small steps will lead to big goals.
