Melissa Kahn Created a Community that Continues to Push Boundaries
Today I am going a few easy miles with a woman that I had on the show a few years back.

Melissa Kahn Post-Buffalo 13.1
Melissa Kahn is the creator of the Run Heifer Run community.
Since her first time on the show, Melissa has continued to do amazing things with her training and community at large.
Ditching The Comfort Zone
Melissa doesn’t consider herself a large risk taker.
Her risk aversion tendencies had to be put aside when she was approached with a once in a lifetime opportunity.
The headphone company AfterShokz offered to sponsor Melissa for a triathlon in Nepal.
Many months of training culminated in a trip halfway around the world.
The travel itself was not without some obstacles.
A race put on in a developing third world country was a unique experience.
The day of the much-anticipated triathlon did not turn out how Melissa had envisioned it.
The beauty of the surroundings and the kindness of the locals quickly overshadowed any disappointment she had with her race.

Run Heifer Run Community
When Melissa created the Run Heifer Run Community she never envisioned the growth that would occur.
The group has grown to over 2000 members while still retaining her original purpose for the group.
Inspiring people of all walks of life to get healthier is her main goal and being a runner is not a requirement.
A supportive and ego-free environment is key to the success of the community.
Everyone gets off track at one point or another and Melissa offers some tips for getting back:
- Accountability is key.
- Be transparent and reach out to others for help/support.
- Make little goals that are more attainable rather than one big goal.
A busy life is not an excuse to neglect yourself and your goals.
Everyone has the same 24 hours in their day.
Mental Health Awareness
A stigma is often associated with mental health.
Melissa is working to raise awareness that there is a strength in saying, “It’s ok to NOT be ok.”
As part of her mission to support this cause, she is organizing the first Run Heifer Run Race.
ALL the proceeds will go to Mind, a mental health charity.
Registration is currently open for the August 12, 2018 race at Sutton Park in England.
The race which includes a 1k, 5k, or 10k has an in person as well as a virtual option.

There’s always room for more members of the tribe! Both the Facebook group and the email group provide opportunities that can’t be found anywhere else. The Facebook group is still small, but it is a great way to connect with fellow runners and foster community amongst like-minded individuals. The email group is THE way to stay up to date about future guests on the show, as well as getting some other freebies and offers that aren’t available to anyone else. If you’ve got questions about either/both, just let me know!
