Today I’m joining fellow running dad Noel Paine for a few easy miles.
At one point or another, Noel has run races of every distance from 100m to 100k. And while he hasn’t competed on the track in many years, the 1500m is still his favorite distance to race.
Noel is toying with the idea of getting back on the track and competing again.
Why the heck not?
The Evolution of Running
Noel has been running for most of his life, and one of the questions I asked him had to do with how he has seen running change over the past 30+ years.
The first thing that came to mind for Noel was the accessibility of information for runners, especially in Canada.
When he started, there were no running magazines available in Canada, so he would read Runners World (the US version) and was only familiar with the best American runners.
Noel has also witnessed the evolution of running apparel. Gone are the days of cotton race t-shirts and cotton socks. Nowadays virtually every race, big or small, have tech shirts for their runners.
Becoming a Dad
Noel recently became a father for the first time, and as all parents can attest, that is a bit of an adjustment.
Noel is still getting used to pushing the running stroller, and while he’s not the biggest fan it allows him to get out there and run while spending time with his daughter.
100k for Your Birthday?
For Noel’s most recent birthday, he decided to “celebrate” by running 100k.
I’m not sure that 62 miles would be my idea of a birthday present to myself, but Noel enjoyed it. He took a bus out of town, jumped on a rails to trail that runs through a number of small towns, and just started heading back toward home.
He stopped in the towns for supplies as needed, and got some birthday gifts from trail angels along the way as well.

There’s always room for more members of the tribe! Both the Facebook group and the email group provide opportunities that can’t be found anywhere else. The Facebook group is still small, but it is a great way to connect with fellow runners and foster community amongst like minded individuals. The email group is THE way to stay up to date about future guests on the show, as well as getting some other freebies and offers that aren’t available to anyone else.
