QT: Life Evolves Over Time, and Your Running May Evolve Too
The only constant in the world is change.
From single-celled organisms to human beings, life is always evolving.
And, more than likely, as you go through life, your running may evolve, too.
5 Ways Your Running May Evolve
I’m sure there are almost an unlimited number of ways that running may evolve over time, but here are five examples that I feel are most common.
New Style of Running
Once a road runner, always a road runner?
Road running and trail running may seem very similar, but they really are two very different sports.
Some runners like to dabble in both disciplines.
Some are all in on one or the other.
But over time? Nothing says you can’t evolve from one style of running to another, either exclusively or just a shift in percentage.
No More Races
Another way your running may evolve over time is a lack of desire to run races.
I know for some of us, this seems completely blasphemous.
But the fact of the matter is that it’s entirely possible to enjoy running without ever pinning on another race bib.
Dial Things Back
Father Time, near as I can tell, is still undefeated.
Aging brings about a whole host of changes to how our bodies work, and at some point we may come to the realization that less could be more.
Maybe 50 miles per week is too much, but 25 is perfect. Or marathons leave you beat up for a month or more, but a few days after a 10k, you’re feeling normal again.
Shift in Focus
More than a few runners have their own goals.
To be clear, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to push yourself and explore your own personal limits.
But there’s also nothing wrong with running in the pursuit of others’ goals.
Helping new runners find their way. Pacing friends. Running with your kids.
No More Running
Life and running may evolve to a point where you no longer wish to run.
And that’s ok.
If you don’t enjoy running anymore, don’t run. Simple as.
Evolution Goes Both Ways
The most important takeaway from the idea that running may evolve over time is that evolution doesn’t stop.
As such, a change now may not be a change forever.
My advice, for whatever it’s worth?
Embrace the inevitable evolution.
Instead of trying to fight to maintain the status quo, ride the waves of your running journey, however they present themselves at the moment.
If you do that, you’ll be good to go no matter how running may evolve for you in the future.
If you keep running long enough, odds are your running is going to evolve. #runchat Share on X
