Rebecca Barber is a Connoisseur of Costumes and Fat Asses

Today I am running a few easy miles with fellow Altra ambassador Rebecca Barber.

Rebecca is also the organizer for the Rocky 50k Fat Ass in Philadelphia, held annually in late Novermber/early December.

Getting an Early Start

Rebecca has been running for most of her life.
When running for a track club in college, her coach recommended she try running a marathon.
She did, and the rest is history!
Rebecca is a lover of all distances and has even done a couple of 100 milers, but she definitely has a soft spot in her heart for the marathon.

It’s a Fat Ass

The Rocky 50k Fat Ass derived its inspiration from the movie Rocky, and it covers the route that he would run during the training montage from the movie.

An author mapped out the run, and after seeing the story Rebecca knew she needed to make an event out of it!
She phoned the author asking for permission to turn his route into a Fat Ass, and an annual event was born.
In case you’re unfamiliar with the term, a Fat Ass race is an unorganized-organized race.
There are no official times, aid stations, medals, t-shirts or minimum distance you must cover. Instead, you just show up and run as much (or as little) as you’d like.

Lady Gaga Started it All

Rebecca’s third marathon happened to be run on Halloween, so she decided to have a little fun by dressing up. Little did Rebecca know that wearing a Lady Gaga costume for that race would become a bit of a thing going forward.
19 of Rebecca’s 21 marathons have been run while wearing a costume!
While worrying about putting together a different running costume for each marathon does add an extra layer of stress to her race preparations, Rebecca doesn’t mind doing it because of the love and smiles she gets from her fellow runners on race day.
Rebecca has run races in a number of different costumes, including Wonder Woman, Princess Leia, a Pirate and even as a coffee cup!
