Susie Chan Takes on All Races: From Roads to Trails to Deserts to Jungles!

In today’s episode of the show, I’m going a few easy miles with Susie Chan.

Susie is a beast of a runner, and she regularly competes on both the roads and the trails.

And she’s definitely not one to back down from a challenge, as she has competed in some of the difficult events in the world!

Marathon des Sables

In the last handful of years, Susie has run Marathon des Sables three seperate times.

Marathon des Sables is a multi-day ultra marathon event through the Sahara Desert.

According to some, this is the toughest race in the world. Obviously, that is a subjective rating, but the difficulty of this event cannot be argued.

The first year that Susie ran it, she didn’t know exactly what she was doing as she had only started running a little over a year prior, so simply finishing the event was the goal.

The second time in the Sahara, Susie had her best showing in this event to date.

This year things didn’t go well for Susie, but she’s planning to run it again in 2018, possibly for the last time, and hopefully she’s saving her best for last!

Always Up for a Challenge

Susie is the kind of runner that doesn’t shy away from a challenge.

In addition to running across the Sahara Desert three times, with a fourth date already on the calendar, Susie has also raced events in various jungles around the globe.

We talked about her experience with the Jungle Ultra, which is a race from the Andes in Peru down to the Amazon bason.

Earlier this year she also ran a multi-day race in Costa Rica, which was a combination of harsh jungle trekking/racing and some running on the beach and jungle roads.

When I asked Susie why she keeps going back for more, she said that she simply enjoys a challenge.

In my mind, some of these events are beyond challenging and borderline insane, but to each their own I guess!

She also admitted that she enjoys the travel and the chance to see different parts of the world along the way.

The one challenge that Susie hasn’t been up to, yet, is a cold weather race.

She’s got her eye on a couple of different arctic events, but she hasn’t pulled the trigger on those races yet because she simply doesn’t like being in the cold.

Maybe she’s human after all…

World Record Holder

As if running across the desert or through the jungle isn’t bad ass enough, Susie is also a former World Record Holder.

Susie was taking part in a study at a Kingston University that involved running on a treadmill for 8 hours, and after that someone pointed out that she was close to setting a new World Record for distance on the treadmill.

After that, the planning started for her attempt at setting a new World Record.

Several months and a lot of planning later, Susie was back at Kingston University with the goal of a new World Record.

12 hours later, she earned her spot in the Guiness Book of World Records!
