Ray Zahab Takes Extreme Running to the Extreme

On today’s show, I’m running with Ray Zahab to chat about some of the incredible experiences and running expeditions that he’s experienced in his years as a runner.

His first extreme adventure was to run across the Sahara desert with Charlie Engle and Kevin Lin. And that experience was the catalyst of his many subsequent adventures. From running across several deserts to running to the South Pole, Ray is always looking for new opportunities to push himself to the extremes.

We chatted about several of his expeditions, as well as many of the other things that he has going on during our run today. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Why is running his greatest teacher?
  • The preparation that goes into each of his expeditions
  • Hands down, the most difficult thing he’s faced is the extreme cold temperatures
  • Why Impossible2Possible was founded
  • The importance of connecting with schools during the expeditions and sharing the experience with students
  • Going from a regular smoker to an ultra marathoner

If you’d like to learn more about Ray and what he’s got going on, check out his website or his Facebook page.

And if you’d like to learn more about the youth expeditions that Ray is so passionate about, check out the impossible2Possible website and follow the i2P Facebook page as well!

Diz Runs With… Dane Rauschenberg

For today’s run, I’m joining one of the real extremists in the running community for a few easy miles. Dane Rauschenberg didn’t take up running long distances until he was in law school, and he hasn’t stopped running since.

Dane’s story is unremarkable at first, and probably sounds very similar to many folks that started running after high school and college. And after his first marathon, he didn’t run again for 2 years. Fast forward to today, and Dane is running all of the time.

  • Organizing a Pikermi race, and pushing to change the name of the Half Marathon to the Pikermi.
  • Setting a PR on the 42nd marathon of his 52 marathons in 52 weeks.
  • How he found out he has Gilbert’s syndrome, and how that makes his accomplishments even more incredible.
  • Running 84 laps on a 1-mile loop in 24 hours.
  • The difference between liking to run and liking to race.

Our conversation was a great one, and talking with Dane really makes me want to start doing some serious pushing to see just how far I can go.

I may never run 52 marathons in 52 weeks, but 5 marathons in 5 days? Stay tuned….
