Today I’m running with Jessica Hofheimer, who has knocked over 2 hours off of her marathon time from her first 26.2 to her current PR, for a few easy miles.
Improving from the Inside Out
One area of running that Jessica has struggled with, basically the entire time that she’s been running, is the dreaded GI distress.
Even though she has been able to get much faster over the years, she almost always has to stop and use the facilities whether she’s training or racing.
But Jessica just thought of that as “normal” for her.
Recently, she has learned that maybe GI issues aren’t something she has to live with for the rest of her running life.
She has started working with a nutritionist to repair the health of her gut, and the hope is that down the road she will be able to run hard without having to stop and use the bathroom once or twice during every single race.
Jessica has also been monitoring her health from the inside out lately after utilizing a blood test from InsideTracker to check key biomarkers that can be improved and lead to improved performance.
Taking a Step Back
Jessica has no plans on slowing down anytime soon, but she has kind of taken a step back in her training at the moment.
She doesn’t have any marathons on her schedule for the rest of the year, which wasn’t necessarily an easy decision but is most likely the right decision.
Between working to improve her gut health and continuing to monitor and improve some of the other internal factors of her health that can lead to improved performance and a major disruption in her family life, not trying to race a marathon this fall is going to be a welcome break.
She will be running Boston in 2017, so that will be a focus, and she’s also eyeing a sub-3 hour race.
By taking it a little easier this fall and addressing her inner health, hopefully Jessica will have a truly epic year in 2017!
