High Heels are the Devil

QT: Non-Running Shoes Can (and Do!) Contribute to Running Injuries (Best Of-ish)

Can we talk about the elephant in the room?

Elephant in the Room

When it comes to runners and their shoes, there are no shortage of arguments about which shoes are the best.

If you’ve been around these parts for more than a minute, you know that I’m a huge believer in Altras and their zero-drop platform.

But this quick tip isn’t about why I think Altras rule and other shoes drool.

No, this quick tip is about what you’re putting on your feet when you’re not running.

Because believe it or not, those shoes matter too. A lot.

Rotating Your Running Shoes

QT: How Necessary is it to Rotate Your Running Shoes?

Are you a shoe rotator?

Many runners are.

There was a question in last month’s Q&A about the lifespan of running shoes, and it got me thinking about shoe rotation.

The more I thought about it, the more questions seemed to bubble to the surface.

It seemed to me like it might be worth fleshing out the questions a bit and discussing some of the reasons behind why it might not be a bad idea to rotate your shoes.

And also why it might not be necessary to rotate your running shoes.

The Running Shoe Debate Continues

The Shoe Debate Continues, But Are We Missing the Point?

The “great running shoe debate” continues concerning whether or not running barefoot is better for you than running while wearing shoes.

The Running Shoe Debate Continues

To Shoe, Or Not To Shoe? That is the Question

I originally wrote this post back in 2013, and things really haven’t change much in the last 2.5 years.

review published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine does little to help steer the shoe debate one way or the other.

The research fails to draw any definitive conclusions about the risks of running barefoot as opposed to running while wearing shoes.

However, many have hailed this review as a good starting point to begin taking a more evidenced based approach to answering the question, as opposed to the subjective running shoe debate that continues to be had between the two camps with little progress being made one way or the other. Read more

Shoe Review: The Altra Instinct 3.5 (with Video)

I have a long relationship the Altra Instinct running shoes.

My first pair of Altra’s were the Original Instincts, the 1.0s, and I LOVED those shoes!

I Was a “Little” Excited to Get My 2nd Pair of 1.0s

I kept buying them until my size was no longer available, and I still have a pair that only has a few hundred miles of wear that I put on for a short run from time to time.

When I could no longer get my hands on a pair of the originals, I made the move to a newer (at the time) model of my beloved shoe, the Instinct 2.0. And let’s just say that I wasn’t fond of the updates that had been made to the original model.

So now, after a couple of years away from my beloved Instincts and lots of good reports from my fellow Altra Ambassadors, I decided to give the newest iteration a shot.

Altra Ambassador 2.0

I received some exciting news over the weekend-I’ve been selected to be a brand ambassador for Altra again in 2015!

I was an ambassador with the company last year, and I’m really looking forward to waving their flag again this year. Honestly, I’m not sure why Altra chose me since it seems like all of their ambassadors are total bad asses (I think the term amBADassadors was floated around last year) and I’m just a slow guy trying to run a marathon in each of the 50 states. But whether they just needed a “token normal runner” or if they just got me confused with someone else, I’m excited to be back in the fold.

I had Golden Harper, founder of the company, on the podcast awhile back, and if you don’t know anything about Altra I’d definitely recommend you check out that episode. The story of Altra coming into existence is a good one that is highlighted by road trips, toaster ovens, and demand from their customers. It’s truly an incredible story, and well worth the listen.

If you ever have any questions or are thinking about trying your first pair of Altras, let me know. I’m happy always happy to help, even if the company fixes the glitch and I’m no longer an official ambassador!
