Tom Foreman on Getting Back Into Running and the Lessons Learned Along the Way

On today’s run, I’m joining CNN Reporter and new author Tom Foreman for a few easy miles.

Tom Foreman

Tom Foreman on the Trails

Tom and I shared some great conversation, covering a variety of running related topics including his newly released book My Year of Running Dangerously. (Affiliate Link)

But the book isn’t just about his running and his racing, but also about how it’s changed him, become a family thing, and the lessons that have been learned along the way including finding time to run in addition to all of the other things going on in our lives.

I try to put as much effort into the other things in my life as I do into running. ~@tomforemancnn Click To Tweet

This was definitely a great chat, and I know you’re going to enjoy our conversation. Here are a few of the highlights:

  • The allure of odd distance races
  • The blessing and the curse of being a natural runner when he was younger
  • The “business” of running and how it has changed
  • His running goal going forward is probably the same as yours and mine
  • Getting back into running to support his daughter
  • Running has turned into a family affair
  • Stop thinking of your training plan as a recipe guaranteed to achieve a desired result
  • How the book came about

If you want to connect with Tom, you can find him on the Twitter @tomforemancnn.

And if you’d like to pick up a copy of his book, you can find it wherever books are sold.

I saw this book just last week and almost bought it! Guess I’ll head back over and pick it up now. I really enjoyed Tom’s view on running and racing and just finishing the race. I think we have pretty similar views on why we run and how running is a part of our life, not our entire life. I’ll look forward to the follow-up.

We had a really good chat!

It’s funny because before we started, he asked if we could keep the call to 45-50 minutes. I said sure, but then we ended up talking for close to 25-30 minutes after the interview ended! I was trying to let him go, but he wanted to keep talking and I was enjoying the conversation so I just rolled with it.
