Emily Toia Runs Ultra Distances Without Stepping Out Her Door

Today on the show I’m going a few easy treadmill miles with Emily Toia.

Emily Toia

The running tool most runners dread is what she runs most of her miles on.

Emily is not your typical ultra runner, in case you were wondering.

Don’t Dread the Treadmill

Emily is an ultra runner that has finished six 100 mile races and eight 50 mile races.

Most years her mileage hovers around 4,000.

What makes Emily especially unique is that most of these miles are done on a treadmill.

Her love affair with her treadmill began out of necessity and she has come to enjoy it.

Training indoors has allowed her to not worry about planning routes, traffic, animals, and fluid/fuel shortages.

While she adores trails, the treadmill has allowed her to safely and easily train long and hard.

Gradual Build

Emily wasn’t always a high mileage runner.

After training and running her first marathon she pulled back on training and would run 3-4 miles at a time throughout the week.

After a few years of lower mileage, her desire to train intensely returned.

A normal week of running for Emily includes 5 days of running with 2 dedicated rest days.

Her mileage ranges anywhere from 65-100 miles depending on the week with a combination of easy runs and speed work.

Unconventional Charity Running

Most charity running takes places outside and in the form of races.

Emily is proving that raising money can take place in many different forms.

Running miles for causes close to her heart is what pushes her to do these challenging endurance feats.

Two of her charity runs included 24 hours on a treadmill along with a 100 miler.

My comments are most lovingly biased, but this girl and her heart bring me joy. She is both authentic and real as a woman and a runner. Thanks for giving others the chance to get a picture of this charitable, talented loving woman. She inspires and blesses us daily. Her immediate family as well as her dear friends continue to love and appreciate her heart.

Emz is AMAZING! Being a treadmill runner, she is my running idol as well as one of the most honest, supportive, and loving people I’ve fortunate enough to call “friend”. I’m so thankful I found her through social media.

Hey Denny! Great interview! I’m Christina, one of the friends Emily will be running with in Boston…once I qualify! 😉

She really is one of the kindest, most genuine and dedicated people I know. I look up to her in so many ways!! She has supported me and my running since the day we met (on social media, nonetheless). After I ran my first marathon, I swore I’d never do it again. Five years later, I “met” Emily and was convinced to give it another shot — with her by my side from start to finish. I haven’t looked back since.

Thanks for having her on your show. Now even more people know how much of an inspiring badass she is!

Thanks for giving it a listen Christina, and good luck with the Boston Qualifying struggles! I’m working on getting there myself!

And you’re right, Emily is a wonderful lady and total running badass!
