Coach Jay Johnson Shares His Simple, But Not Easy, Tips for Becoming a Better Runner

Today I’m running a few miles with a coach that knows a little something about getting the most out of his runners.

Jay Johnson has been coaching runners for over 15 years.

Under Jay’s tutelage, athletes have run PRs in races from 1 to 100 miles. Jay has also coached national championship winning runners in cross country, track, and on the roads.

Jay is also an author, podcast host, and the director of Boulder Running Camps.

On The Right Track

Jay ran collegiately at the University of Colorado.

After his time competing at CU, Jay moved immediately into coaching at his alma mater.

Jay’s life now is completely centered around coaching. Almost all aspects of his daily routine center on bettering himself and his runners.

Recently Jay has not been able to run as much due a knee injury, but that has not slowed down his will to improve.

On the road to recovery, Jay has focused his efforts in other areas.

Running Efficiently

In Jay’s book, Simple Marathon Training, he lays out how to efficiently train for a marathon into your schedule.

The book will break down each workout by the amount of time you have and by your objectives.


At the end of the day, properly training for a marathon may be simple but it sure isn’t easy!
