Mirna Valerio Proves that Badass Runners Come in All Shapes and Sizes

Today I’m running a few easy miles with Mirna Valerio.

Mirna Valerio

Mirna Valerio

If her name sounds familiar, don’t be alarmed.

She has been recently featured in the Wall Street Journal, NBC Nightly News, and Runners World.

I can’t quite compete with those outlets, but thankfully Mirna has low standards when it comes to chatting on a podcast!

A Non-Running Start

Mirna started playing field hockey her freshman year of high school and knew that in order to play well she needed to be a better runner.

So she’d rise and run most days, and before long a habit was formed.

Mirna has definitely kept up with running after her days on the athletic fields were over, though she did let her running habit fade as life got busy.

After the birth of her first child in 2004, Mirna stopped running altogether.

After a health scare in 2008, however, Mirna recommitted to improving her health and fitness, and she hasn’t stopped running since!

The Mirnavator

In 2010, Mirna became addicted to her training. 10-mile runs started to feel good, and the Mirnavator was born!

After running many half-marathons, Mirna gave in to some peer pressure and signed up for her first marathon.

One race led to another and another, and then another. Eventually, peer pressure won again and Mirna ran her first ultra-marathon.

Fast forward to earlier this year, and Mirna found herself in Colorado and participating in the 6-day TransRockies stage race!

Mirna the Author

Mirna recently published her first book, A Beautiful Work in Progress.

Mirna’s book is a body positive running memoir focused on long-term health and wellness. The book serves as an overview of how running has impacted her life.

And for the audio book, Mirna actually had to audition to be the narrator for her own book! She “got the gig”, and you can hear her reading the book to you if you pick it up on Audible.
