QT: Is It Worth It? Wegrynd Tech Shirts and Altra Running Shorts

One of the perks of my job is that, from time to time, companies will send me goodies to use/try/have in hopes that I’ll give a glowing review of their products either here, on the podcast, or on the social medias.

I appreciate getting to try some stuff, but one thing that I’m 100% firm about is that I will only speak honestly about the products that I receive.

You Can't Handle the Truth

If a company wants me to talk about their product favorably? Make a good product.

Send me something that sucks? And I’ll tell my audience it sucks.

Y’all remember the Soleus watch review, right?

So today, I’m going to deliver the good, the bad, and the ugly about a couple of pieces of running apparel that I’ve been able to use/test/evaluate in the past few months.

Get ready, because I’m about to unleash some truth today y’all.

Wegrynd Tech Shirt

Think all tech shirts are created equal? Think again.

No joke, this is the best shirt I’ve ever run in.

You may be wondering what criteria I’m using to make such a bold claim.

My nipples.

Yeah, you read that right.

The reason that the tech shirt from Wegrynd is easily the best shirt I’ve ever worn while running is that the fabric is soft enough that my nipples do not bleed while I’m wearing it.

Any shirt that does that is a winner in my book!

Let’s take a slightly more in depth look at this product though, shall we?

Wegrynd is a small company owned and operated by a husband and wife team.

While nipple comfort was a primary factor in evaluating this shirt for me, there are other factors at play that you might be slightly more concerned with.

  • All of the shirts/tanks are made with the same super soft material that is a blend of bamboo charcoal and recycled polyester. If you care about the environment, this is definitely a product (and a company) that you can get behind.
  • If you don’t care about the environment so much, you can/should still get behind the materials that are used to make the shirts because the blend is also moisture wicking, odor absorbing, and provides a serious protection from the UV rays of the sun.

I can’t confirm the reports that it will help protect your skin from the rays of the sun, but I can definitely speak to the claims of the shirt being moisture wicking and odor absorbing.

Over the course of testing this shirt, I wore the shirt for several runs in a row without washing it.

And I’ll be honest, I thought that a funky smell would build up eventually. But after a week of runs, it was still smelling fresh.

To recap:

  • No bloody nipples
  • No funky smell (after several sweaty runs without washing)
  • Soft as a baby’s bottom
  • Environmentally friendly

Seriously, what’s not to love?

Altra Running Shorts

Who Wears Short Shorts?

Y’all know I love me some Altra shoes, but what about their shorts?

My running shorts game has been on a rapid decline over the first half of this year.

Up to this point? I’ve pretty much always run in Target brand running shorts.

They are good for awhile, but after a few months, they tend to develop some little holes in the inner thighs which definitely leads to an increase in chafe factor.

Why do I keep going back to these shorts from Target?

They are like $20 a pair. And honestly, I have a hard time even spending that much for a pair of shorts.

In service to you, however, I decided to pull the trigger on some more expensive shorts to see how they compare to the cheaper variety that I’m used to.

(Full disclosure: as an Altra Ambassador I get a 50% discount on purchases I make. So that actually made the price that I paid only slightly more expensive than those that I would normally get from Target.)

I can honestly say that after several runs in these shorts, so far so good.

The fabric is very comfortable, the lining is supportive, and they breathe very well.

There is a claim made on the website that the lining is also anti-odor, but let’s just say that after a few runs in these jokers they definitely needed to be washed.

The liner may be anti-odor, but something in the shorts will hold on to a little funk after a few runs.

But if you work from home and your sense of smell is next to useless, a little funk is no big deal.

While I really do like these shorts and definitely see myself grabbing another couple of pairs, there are a couple of things that you should be aware of if you’re going to order you some.

  • Not much for pockets.
  • Not as long as I thought. (Probably user error when ordering for this one.)

Would I pay the full price ($50) for a pair?

Honestly, it’ll all come down to how long they hold up.

If they stay in good condition for a year or more, then I would absolutely spend $50 for a pair.

So far, they are still holding up perfectly. But I’ve only been wearing them regularly for about a month.

Assuming they are still going strong into 2018, these shorts will also be very highly recommended by me.
