I’ve noticed a bit of a trend of late when I scroll through social media.
Anger? Frustration? Disbelief? Disgust?
Social media sucks for a lot of reasons, and I’m not here to discuss all of those reasons today.
For whatever reason, the social media hype train seems to be out of control lately.
In case you haven’t noticed…
This Really Isn’t Anything New
It’s not like over-the-top marketing hype is a new thing.
Which can only mean one thing, right?
And that brings me to my ultimate question today: how?
You and I both know that the hype is (virtually) nothing but bullshit.
Yet we, collectively, keep falling for it so the hype train just keeps running with no end in sight.
A Bit of Discernment Goes a Long Way
Anyone selling anything wants to put their product or service in the best possible light right?
And yes, this absolutely includes your boy.
But whether we are talking about some million-dollar commercial on the Super Bowl, an advertisement on a podcast, or some social media influencer pedaling whatever product, take it all with a grain of salt.
Especially if (when?) it sounds too good to be true.
Can I let you in on a little secret?
There are no perfect products or services.
- The perfect shoes?
- The fuel that provides everything you need on race day?
- The miraculous recovery tool?
- The running coach that guarantees if you just follow his/her proven program you’ll PR at your next race?
Now, to be clear, I’m not saying that there isn’t any truth to the marketing of the various running-related things that you see advertised in various places.
And I’m definitely not saying that all of the different products or services are worthless.
All I’m saying is that you might be better off stopping and thinking about the claims being made, and especially about who is making the claims, before you just blindly accept the marketing hype as gospel truth.
