QT: Setting Goals and Getting After It in 2022
Happy New Year!
As curmudgeon as I am, something about a new year just gets me excited.
I guess I just love dropping all the baggage from the previous year and looking ahead to all the new possibilities of the new year.
Who knows how 2022 is going to shake out?
But I know I’m going to do my best to make 2022 a banner year, in both running and life.
Hopefully, you’ll be able to do the same.
Looking Back First
Before I dive into my goals and whatnot for 2022, I think it’s important to take an honest look back at last year.
Whether 2021 was a complete and total shit show for you, or whether it was a pretty solid year, there are lessons and takeaways from last year that can help you set yourself up for success in the new year.
I’d have to rate last year as a solid year for myself.
Perfect? Nah, far from perfect.
Overall, it was a win. And I’ll take the win.
I’m also going to take a few bits from 2021 that will, hopefully, make 2022 an even better year for me and the girls.
Ups and Downs from 2021
Last year’s running goals were pretty straightforward:
- Run the Year
- 3,000 minutes of Spin Bike/Yoga
- Complete 80% of my Tue/Thu Strength Sessions
- Complete One MAF Test per Month
- Complete One “Hard Run” per Month
On the Empire building front, I’m sure I had some goals but I honestly can’t remember what they were.
Clearly not.
So how’d I do?
On the running front, mostly wins with one big let-up.
I ended up with my highest mileage year ever.
And my 2750+ miles run were about a thousand miles more than I put on my car in 2021, so there’s that too.
My strength training goal came up a bit short, ending up at 79% success for the year.
I was crushing this one for most of the year but really fell off on my strength training the last ~6 weeks or so of the year.
Why?
In a lot of cases, I legitimately forgot to do my strength training.
I’ll be sure to remedy that in the new year.
MAF and hard runs done, 12/12.
The spin bike/yoga goal?
1100 combined minutes.
Pathetic.
And something that desperately needs to be improved in 2022.
As for the business/Empire, it also was a pretty good year.
Which is good, seeing as I apparently had zero defined goals for the year.
Note to self: have at least one or two defined goals for the new year, eh?
My 2022 Goals
My goals for the new year are just that: mine.
Please, for the love of everything holy, don’t get caught up in comparing your goals with mine, or with anyone else’s.
Doing so will often do more harm than good because either you’ll be selling yourself short or you’ll be biting off more than you can chew.
Your goals should be yours and yours alone.
That said, the reason I’m sharing my goals this year is because I know a little bit of public accountability can be very helpful.
I know there are a few of you that will keep track of my goals and will ask how I’m doing on occasion.
Knowing that those questions are coming can be helpful to staying on track on the days when I don’t really want to.
If you’d like a little public accountability, feel free to share your goals on this post in the FB group and I’ll make sure to check in how you’re doing on occasion too.
Right then, on to this year’s goals.
On the running front:
- Run the Year
- 2500 min Cross-Training/Yoga
- 1000 min Foam Rolling
- 80% of Strength Training Workouts Completed
- MAF Test Pace sub-7:30
Ultimately? Pretty similar to 2021.
If I can hit the mark on my cross-training/yoga goal and get in a bit of a regular routine with the foam roller, I think it can be another really successful running year.
When it comes to the continued construction of the Empire, I’ll keep those goals a bit closer to the vest.
But I’ll share two: actually do some work on the book and get the YouTube channel going again.
There are other things, of course, but I don’t want to bore you with all the businessy nonsense that you probably don’t care about.
Have a Great Year
Whatever your plans are for this year, whatever goals you have for yourself, I hope you have a great year.
If I can help in some way, coaching or otherwise, let me know and I’ll do what I can!
