QT: The Benefit of Regularly Looking for Trouble

If you look hard enough for trouble, you’re bound to find it.

There are no shortage of quotes that say something to that effect.

And while finding yourself in trouble is seldom the ideal scenario, one could make the argument that in some instances you would be better off looking for trouble proactively than waiting for it to find you.

Especially for us runners.

A Peek Behind the Curtain

I was talking with one of the runners I coach recently, and she said something that got my gears turning a bit.

“I didn’t realize how tight my calf was until I started rolling it consistently.”

A bit of backstory without giving any pertinent details away.

She had noticed the calf was a little tight once in a while for the last month or two.

Occasionally, the tightness felt like it was behind the knee as well.

Rarely, if ever, was it an issue during a run.

We talked about what she was feeling a few times, and I offered a few suggestions of what may be going on.

I also recognized, and communicated, that it would be hard to nail down exactly what was going on via our text communication. So if she had a chance to see someone, that could be really helpful.

Fast forward to her talking with someone in person that was able to help offer some suggestions, and signs pointed toward a really tight calf.

So she got to work on it, and that’s when she dropped the bombshell above on me.

What Does This All Mean?

I don’t know that I’ve ever framed it this way, but this is one of those reasons I prattle on all the time about foam rolling.

One thing that regularly spending time on the foam roller can do is help you see/feel how tight a muscle actually is.

Yes, the foam roller can be a great tool for working out adhesions or knots or tight spots that you’re already aware of.

But it can also be a great tool for discovering some of these issues before they’ve gotten to the point of making themselves obvious.

Which brings me back to the idea of looking for trouble.

I don’t think too many of us want to have to deal with muscular issues.


But as runners, we are going to have more than our fair share of adhesions and knots and muscular tight spots.

The earlier we can find these issues? The easier they are to address.

So my advice, driven home to me by a recent conversation with one of the #DizRunners, is to go looking for muscular trouble spots regularly.

Because the sooner you find trouble in your muscles, the sooner you’re able to resolve it.
