QT: Focus on What You Can Control, Don’t Sweat the Rest

Are you a control freak?

Control Freak

Guilty?

If we are honest, there are several components of our training/racing that we have absolutely no control over, no matter how much we may try.

And for a lot of runners, control freaks or not, that can be an issue.

If you find yourself on edge leading up to a race, do yourself a favor and take a deep breath.

No matter how much you want to be in control of every facet of your race, that’s impossible. And stressing over your lack of control is only going to make the situation worse. Read more

Running an Ultra With Nary a Clue

Suzy has fallen in love with the 50 mile distance, even though she’s only raced that distance once.

The fact that she’s only run 50 miles once (and only one other ultra distance event in general) and she loves the distance was a bit of a surprise to me, but her reasoning makes sense.

Ryan has almost run more races than he can count, ranging in distances from 5ks to full marathons.

But for Ryan, racing is secondary to the benefits that running has had on helping him mentally. Ryan has dealt with OCD and anxiety for most of his life, and in some of his darkest times a friend and runner (that also had issues with anxiety) suggested he try running as a way to help with the symptoms he was dealing with.

In today’s episode, Ryan talks candidly about his struggles with OCD and anxiety, how running has helped change his focus to something that is positive, and how that change of focus his literally changed his life.

He also offers some words of advice for those that may be suffering with OCD and anxiety in silence that I think all of us can use when we are dealing with the inevitable rough patches in our lives.

Here are a few of the highlights from our chat. Read more
