His first extreme adventure was to run across the Sahara desert with Charlie Engle and Kevin Lin. And that experience was the catalyst of his many subsequent adventures. From running across several deserts to running to the South Pole, Ray is always looking for new opportunities to push himself to the extremes.

We chatted about several of his expeditions, as well as many of the other things that he has going on during our run today. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Why is running his greatest teacher?
  • The preparation that goes into each of his expeditions
  • Hands down, the most difficult thing he’s faced is the extreme cold temperatures
  • Why Impossible2Possible was founded
  • The importance of connecting with schools during the expeditions and sharing the experience with students
  • Going from a regular smoker to an ultra marathoner

If you’d like to learn more about Ray and what he’s got going on, check out his website or his Facebook page.

And if you’d like to learn more about the youth expeditions that Ray is so passionate about, check out the impossible2Possible website and follow the i2P Facebook page as well!

And the catalyst to making these changes in his life? Losing his mom at the age of 58 to heart disease brought about by obesity. At 330+ pounds he didn’t want to go down the same path with his health, and he started running.

He started slow, and built up, and now he is training for the Leadville 100. Read more

We covered some ground talking about some of the races/events he’s already completed (which are pretty amazing), some of the possibilities he’s considering for the future, and the process of coming to grips with his injury while not letting it prevent him from continuing to do amazing things. Here are some of the highlights from our chat:

  • Tackling the RAAM (Race Across America) bike race this summer
  • Completing 2 UltraMan Events in 2014
  • The possibility of running the LA Marathon, keep going across the country, and finish by running Boston
  • The process of recovering from and continuing to live a full life after his injury
  • Post injury, his first foray into fitness was to get in the water and start swimming
  • Once he got a taste for triathlons, the rest has been history
  • Going to Brazil for a 135 mile ultramarathon
