Who’s Up for a Challenge?

A little peer pressure can be a good thing.

Unknown-13

With that said, it’s time for me to make a little announcement and for y’all to help hold me accountable. And hopefully, a few of you will join me as well.

The Challenge

For the month of August, I’m planning on running a minimum of a mile each day.

On the surface, this really isn’t that daunting. I’ve done streaks of a month or more before, but this one will be a little different.

First and foremost, it’s August and I live in Central Florida. I’m pretty sure I don’t have to connect those dots for you.

Second, I am still adjusting to life with a baby. Sleep is sporadic and oft interrupted, which makes it difficult to get out of bed for early morning runs .

Third, I’m heading to Dallas for a few days mid month for a podcasting convention. I’m really looking forward to this trip, but I’ll be busy, it’ll be hot, and I’m not sure how conducive the area of the hotel will be for running.

I could probably keep going with the excuses, but why bother? It’s time to suck it up, and make it happen.

And honestly, no matter how hot it might be, running a mile is completely doable.

Who’s With Me?

A challenge like this is much more fun with others.

Will you do it with me?

Jon Howard, who you may remember from a recent podcast episode, is putting on this challenge through his company Training Edge Sports.

The challenge is simple, just run or walk a mile each day for August, and I would love it if a bunch of you guys would join me in completing the challenge, and representing the Diz Runs Tribe en masse. All you need to do to “officially” take part, is just click over to the TES Facebook page, and join the challenge.

And shoot me a tweet letting me know you’re in, so we can hold each other accountable.

Go join the challenge. Now!

Remember, peer pressure is no fun until you give in!

Hehe.

Diz Runs With… Patricia Lopez

On today’s run, I’m joining Patricia Lopez for a few easy miles. Patricia is a bit unique in that she is a running coach and a yoga instructor. She believes there are many benefits for runners that are able to incorporate regular yoga practice into their training schedule, and I think she’s right.

We talked a lot about the yoga over the course of our conversation, but yoga wasn’t the only subject we talked about. Here are some of the highlights:

  • The imbalances that many runners have.treepose
  • The mental challenge of running.
  • The struggle of slowing down in the fast paced world that we live in.
  • Why being inflexible is a terrible excuse for not doing yoga.
  • Some of the many benefits of yoga–beyond just the stretching.

If you’d like to learn more about the benefits of yoga, I can’t encourage you enough to reach out to Patricia and touch base with her. She is a wealth of knowledge not only in terms of the yoga, but in how the yoga effects your whole body, mind, and soul.

We covered a lot of ground on today’s conversation, but here are a few of the highlights:

  • Deciding to sign up for and run his first ultra-marathon on the same day.
  • Lessons learned from a handful of DNFs.
  • How running ultra-marathons can parallel launching and running a successful business.
  • Running with ultra-marathon veteran John Taylor.

Diz Runs With… Denny Krahe

Today I’m going against the grain a little bit and doing a quick run by myself.

Denny Krahe Headshot

One of the “problems” that I have with always having guests to converse with is that I’m not able to communicate as directly with the listeners of the show. So, from time to time, I’m going to do a solo show to be able to speak directly to you guys in an attempt to find out how I can make the show better.

Today, I wanted to take the time to cover two topics: ideas for how to improve the show and some short term goals I have for the show and website as well.

Ideas for Improvement

    • Sporadic Solo Shows
    • A New Intro
    • More Runs with Race Directors
    • More Giveaways

Short Term Goals

The goals are ambitious for sure, but I know they are attainable if I keep pushing forward. Hopefully, you’ll keep listening and sharing the show to help make these goals possible, and push me on towards bigger and better things.

Diz Runs With… Dane Rauschenberg

For today’s run, I’m joining one of the real extremists in the running community for a few easy miles. Dane Rauschenberg didn’t take up running long distances until he was in law school, and he hasn’t stopped running since.

Dane’s story is unremarkable at first, and probably sounds very similar to many folks that started running after high school and college. And after his first marathon, he didn’t run again for 2 years. Fast forward to today, and Dane is running all of the time.

10264116_10154155284560162_7632183072257102588_oHere are some of the conversational highlights of our run:

  • Organizing a Pikermi race, and pushing to change the name of the Half Marathon to the Pikermi.
  • Setting a PR on the 42nd marathon of his 52 marathons in 52 weeks.
  • How he found out he has Gilbert’s syndrome, and how that makes his accomplishments even more incredible.
  • Running 84 laps on a 1-mile loop in 24 hours.
  • The difference between liking to run and liking to race.

Our conversation was a great one, and talking with Dane really makes me want to start doing some serious pushing to see just how far I can go.

I may never run 52 marathons in 52 weeks, but 5 marathons in 5 days? Stay tuned….

If you’d like to learn more about Dane, and stay up to date with what he has going on, check out his website ( www.seedanerun.com ).

He’s also very active on twitter ( www.twitter.com/seedanerun/ ) and Facebook ( www.facebook.com/seedanerun/ )
