QT: Deciding What’s Next After Finishing the Last Race on Your Calendar
As fall racing season is starting to wind to a close, you may find yourself feeling a bit lost without having a race on your calendar.
Some runners, you know who you are, have already planned out their running/racing calendar well into the next decade.
This quick tip? Not for you guys.
It’s for the rest of us that struggle to figure out what’s next after finishing a big race.
Take a Deep Breath
The first thing I would recommend doing after finishing a big race is to simply chill out for a minute.
You don’t need to rush right to the next thing after finishing a race.
Instead of going forward after a race, take a little bit of time to look back on the race that was.
What went well in the last training cycle? What didn’t go so well? Where can you improve? What do you want to do again? What did you learn about yourself? Where did you improve the most?
Really analyze the past few months of training, as well as your race day performance, and pick apart every detail to know how to better yourself in the future.
Taking the time to look back before going forward will help you WAY more than simply charging forward to the next thing.
Moving Forward After a Race
After you’ve taken the time to analyze your race and you’ve allowed your body ample time to recover, only then should you start looking forward to what’s next.
And at this point, you have nothing but options.
Literally, just about whatever you want to do from a health/running perspective is in play.
- Dive back into training to build on this performance.
- Shift your focus to a different race distance.
- Prioritize a different activity than running.
In this situation, there is no right or wrong answer.
There is only YOUR answer.
So take as much time as you need to figure out what you WANT to do next, and then go out and do it!
