Exciting Changes Taking Place!

“To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.”

~Winston Churchill

It’s an exciting time for me right now, on multiple fronts.

My wife is fixing to have a baby in the next few weeks, so I’ll officially be able to add “Dad” to my resume. To say we are excited would be an understatement.

But the addition to our family isn’t the only change exciting thing coming down the pike.

Another New Addition

I’m super excited about adding another podcast to my plate.

I launched my first podcast, Better Health 101, back in February and I’m absolutely loving the experience. And since that launched, I’ve been kicking around the idea of bringing a running-focused podcast to life as well.

The time is drawing nigh. In just under 3 weeks, “Diz Runs With” will be live, and I think you’re really going to love it.

2nd Draft--Likely to Change

2nd Draft–Likely to Change

The format for the show will be pretty simple, I’m going to talk with people that are in the running community about running, life, future plans, and everything in between. I’ve reached out to pros, celebs, race directors, and other really interesting people within the running community, so I’m excited about the diversity in guests that the show will have.

In addition to the podcast launch, I’ve also created a Facebook Group and am sending out weekly emails to “the people in my tribe” to keep everyone abreast of what’s going on. If you’re reading this, consider yourself invited to join my tribe in both places.

I won’t be sending out spammy emails, but my plan is to announce future guests of the show through the email list only. And if there are any guests that you have a question for, I want to feature a listener question as often as possible in each show. By getting the emails, you’ll know who’s coming and who you want to ask a question of. More details on this still need to be worked out, but you’ll want to be on the email list to stay up to date with the latest.

As for the Facebook Group, I’m just trying to create a community of people that listen to my show to be able to interact with each other and support each other no mater how young, old, fast, slow, or otherwise they might be. And I might be offering some giveaways through the group too. (hint, hint) So join the group, and who know what you might get.

This is Only the Beginning

I’ve got a few other tricks up my sleeve for this website going forward into the future, but I’m not quite ready to announce those yet. Stay tuned for more announcements in the future, but I’ll leak the most exciting info on the email list first, so just go ahead and sign up already!

I’m also working on spicing up the website a little bit, so feel free to go look around a little bit if you haven’t been there recently. And keep checking back, because it seems like I make some little tweak almost daily, and I’d love to hear your feedback throughout the process.

The Day After National Running Day

National Running Day was yesterday, and it was quite the exciting day for runners around the country. Many races offered 1-day sales, running stores had all kinds of promotions, and there seemed to be nothing on twitter but running day love.

National Running Day 2014

Why Do You Run?

Dare I say, it was almost a little too much?

Do We Really Need a National Running Day?

What is the point of National Running Day?

Was it created to help bring runners together as a community? To encourage non-runners to take up the sport? For some other reason?

Is it just a time for us runners to talk about our PRs to our non-running friends? Because seriously, we all do this WAY too much already.

Unknown-8

Non-runners already tend to dislike us as it is, whether it’s because we cross the street without looking, blow snot rockets without missing a beat, or simply because they are secretly jealous. Do we really need to rub it in their faces by having our own “holiday”?

In a word, abso-fricking-lutely!

Runners are Freaking Awesome

The thing that I love most about being in the running community is how supportive we are towards each other.

Whether you’re on Day 1 of Couch-to-5k, or you run freakishly long races, other runners are always willing to offer encouragement, advice, a gel, water, or anything else you might need a long the way.

Case in point–I recently flew up to Virginia to run the Blue Ridge Marathon, and a fellow runner that I had never met in person asked me if I needed a ride from the airport to my hotel?

Really?

Who else would do that besides another runner? That’s right–no one.

I hope you were able to enjoy a run yesterday, Nikki. And thanks again for the ride.

National Running Day All Year Long

The only thing I don’t like about designating the first Wednesday of June as National Running Day is that it only happens once a year.

But the spirit of National Running Day is within us each and every day, and that is something that I’m going to keep in mind on this blog and on the twitter going forward.

Yesterday, we were all willing to support and encourage runners of all shapes, sizes, and speeds.

Let’s do it everyday!

If you want to support and encourage other runners every day, and not just on National Running Day, I want you to join my tribe as a member of my new Facebook group.

I want to cheer for you during your races, and I hope that you’ll cheer for me during mine as well.

Because that’s what the community, running or otherwise, is truly all about.

Let’s Keep the Spirit of National Running Day Alive for 365! Feel Free to Share This Post on Any and All Social Media Channels, and Please Invite Other Runners to Join Us!

What’s In Store for 2014

To me, New Year’s Resolutions are a double edged sword.

I love reading about things that people are planning on doing and accomplishing for the coming year, and the chance to wipe the slate clean from last year and start fresh is always uplifting.

And then there are the posts about why you’ll never achieve your resolution and why you’ll give up by the end of the week, and it’s a bit of a downer.

Let’s not fool anyone, most resolutions don’t make it for an entire year, and keeping them for more than a few days IS difficult.

But the reason I love reading about other people’s resolutions for 2014 is because it takes balls to put yourself out there and announce to the world what you’d like to accomplish. It’s easy to keep your goals to yourself, because if you struggle with keeping them no one else knows. But by telling the world, you’re basically giving everyone permission to hold you accountable and ask how you’re progressing as the year rolls on.

But that’s exactly what I’m doing.

The Plans for 2014

  • Run 1,500 Miles–This one is entirely on me. The last two years, I’ve been able to achieve my mileage goals for the year. While 1,500 miles is my biggest target by far, it’s less than 200 miles more than I ran last year. It’s doable as I can stay healthy and consistent. Here’s hoping.
  • More Blog Giveaways–In 2013, I was able to give a few things away, but I want to be able to do more this year. Whether it is big things or little things, I just want to give more stuff away. So be on the lookout for more giveaways this year.
  • More Guest Posts–When I started the Run Bloggers United movement this summer, I had a lot of people that sounded interested but very little came from it. I had a couple of great guest posts, but not as many as I’d hoped. I’d love to get 25 guest posts this year, but the more the merrier. If you’re interested in writing a post, let me know.
  • More Foam Rolling/Yoga/Ice Massage–My 1,317 miles in 2013 were mostly injury free, but I know that adding more will continue to stress my body. The need for regular routine maintenance is there, yet I only tend to do anything when something starts to hurt a little more than it usually does. I know the little things will catch up with me eventually if it don’t get out in front of them, so that’s the plan for this year.

I’m looking forward to seeing what 2014 has in store for me in terms of my running and I look forward to continuing to becoming a part of the online running community. Y’all continue to inspire me every day, and I hope that I’m able to return the favor on occasion.

Have a great start to the New Year y’all.
