Jenny Nakamura Finds Joy In Sharing Her Running Story

My guest on the show today is a woman that has a serious affinity for racing.

She runs on both trails and roads and is closing in on 100 finishes in races of half marathon distance or longer.

Jenny Nakamura

I am looking forward to going a few easy miles with Jenny Nakamura.

Running Is Always There

Jenny and her running go way back to the time she was in elementary school.

She continued to run on the track team all throughout school while growing up.

Once she reached college, running took a backseat as she focused more on school and her future career.

2009 would be the year that Jenny decided to resume the sport she once loved.

Gradually she was able to work up to a long run of 8 miles.

A freak accident while working caused her to pull her hamstring and derail her training.

Around the time of her accident, Jenny received information about a running program focused on how to run injury free.

Jenny promptly signed up for the Jeff Galloway run walk program as a way to regain her fitness.

A Slippery Slope

In 2011 Jenny completed her first half marathon in Disney.

A full marathon was not a goal of hers until she moved to Phoenix, Arizona.

In her new city, Jenny connected with a group of runners that were mostly running marathons.

Through the power of friends and peer pressure, she gained the confidence to sign up to run a full.

Her original race was supposed to be the NYC Marathon, but it was canceled due to Hurricane Sandy.

It didn’t take long for Jenny to make alternate plans to achieve her goal.

Going full circle, Jenny ran her first marathon at Disney in 2013.

Love Led Her To Trails

Jenny was primarily a road runner in the beginning and rarely ventured onto trails.

That all changed in 2014 after an in-life meet up with a friend from Instagram.

Her new friend introduced her to another runner that was training for the Tahoe 200 trail race.

The introduction of Jenny and the trail runner would soon lead to dating and eventually marriage.

Being married to an ultrarunner introduced Jenny to a whole new side of running and exploration.

It was inevitable that she would complete an ultra and that’s what she did when she finished her first 50k in 2015.

Jenny splits her time evenly between both trails and roads because both offer differences that are appealing to her.

Learning As She Goes

Jenny prefers running outside, but when that’s not possible she turns to the treadmill.

Typically her runs are less than 5 miles and she often uses the high inclines to practice hiking.

Early on in her running, she started writing a blog as a way to tell her story.

The past 5 years worth of writing offer valuable information and insights that Jenny has gained along the way.

Her blog is especially useful for someone that is looking for reviews of various races.

Running with all the ups and downs over the years have taught Jenny many lessons.

Primarily Jenny knows she is stronger than what her mind will ever tell her.

Running has been a confidence booster for Jenny in all areas of her life.
